Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) Ukrainian poet and artist, champion of Ukrainian language, self-determination of peoples, human rights and social justice, on the bicentennial anniversary of his birth. His words and work still hold powerful meaning and serve as inspiration to Ukrainians, and other nations and people of the world, who continue to fight for their rights of self-determination and freedom from oppression.
Visited the UN yesterday to attend a commemorative concert honoring Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko on the 200th anniversary of his birth. Shevchenko was a champion of self-determination, human rights and social justice. The event felt even more meaningful as it occurred on the same day that the UN General Assembly voted in affirmation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and deemed the referendum that led to Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula illegal.
"Let Us Beat Swords into Ploughshears" - Bronze sculpture by Yevgeny Vuchetich, gifted to the UN in 1959
"Mankind’s Struggle For Lasting Peace" (1853) by Spanish artist Jose Vela Zanetti. The 64 ft long and 9.5 ft high mural depicts the ravages of war and concentration camps and shows people working together to rebuild the shattered globe. The mural is in the hallway outside the United Nations Security Council chambers.
